Thoughts on the Gym, Part II

Now that Christmas is over I feel like I have nothing to blog about. So I'm going to blog about my boring life, and right now that includes 5x/week 5:30am workouts. Things have changed a lot since my last post about the gym...

I have gotten much better at pilates! I can tell my core is stronger, but I don't notice it much in my pant size, *sigh*

I figured out why I like watching ESPN when I am working out. They are showing the best of the best plays. It is inspiring to see people excel so much in their sport. It pumps you up, people. And every once in a while they discuss BSU football, woot! On an aside, as I was watching a recap of the BCS championship game this morning I felt so bad for that freshman from Texas who had to take over for Colt McCoy after he got injured early in the game. He didn't do so well. Then I was thinking about how that is why Boise State is so flippin' awesome. They are truly a TEAM. If one of their stars gets injured, they are just fine, someone else is there to pick up the slack. Just my opinion, don't rage on me!!

I can definitely tell that I am in much better shape than I was back in August when I started working out again, for real. I am running now, which I felt like I was going to die doing back in August. But, alas, the weight is SO SLOW coming off. I have lost about 10 pounds in the last 3 months, but I definitely fell off the wagon during Nov/Dec as far as eating goes. But I'm back on now, so the weight can start falling off any time...

I haven't had caffeine for a week, go me! (I'm going to stop this time, FOR REAL. I figured out how much we were spending on soda every month, about $50, and that was enough to convince me!) The first time I worked out after I quit was really hard. My head felt fuzzy and I felt slow. The second day was a little better, today I feel back to normal.

The gym is a great place to people-watch. I love it when someone spontaneously sings or dances whilst listening to their mp3 player. That is awesome.

My ipod got stolen out of my car last week. Luckily that is the only thing they took. Lesson learned, I will always lock my car from now on. Have fun with that 3 year old ipod with my name engraved on the back, by the way. Running was SO HARD without it, at first, but today wasn't so bad. I found a cheap one online, waiting for it to get here in the mail is torture!

I wear the same pair of pants to work out in every day. I am in serious need of some new workout clothes, but oh well....

And lastly, **GULP**, I am running a marathon in May. I start training next week. I have always wanted to do it, and now feels like the right time. I second guess myself and go through periods of anxiety over the whole thing, but then I realize that people like me do it all the time. You don't have to be an ultra-elite athlete to run a marathon. I have 18 weeks to train, and I will be fine. Any advice you have on shoes, clothes, music, special tips would be much appreciated. I read that 95% of a marathon is run in your mind. Good thoughts...

I have lots to say!
So... first, I lost a lot (60 pounds) of weight when I became a single mom and it was not because I was sad and depressed (I was THRILLED!), it was because I ran (walked) EVERY. DAY. for 20-30 minutes. I had been doing pilates for 3 years and probably was sronger too, but I was not fit.

I started running in May- did not see results (except being able to all-out run longer than the length of one block) until August. Between August and October, it fell off.

By august, my workout was pretty intense- but I worked up to it... 30 minute run (or eliptical), 2-3 minutes stretching, then another 10 minutes SPRINTING, THEN 30-60 minutes with physioball (sit ups/back) and weights. I have always loved weight-training, so that was a luxury.

It is developing/keeping a routine that was so important to me.

I LOVE when I dont have to think about it, it is just part of my day. Now we have not gym within 20 miles and no money for a membership... no treadmill... sooooooo I am running outside! (in the 10-20 degree night). It is slow-going, but I am keeping it up.

I have no desire to run a marathon, but I have a very good friend (Francesca Conte) from graduate school that I have helped organize several marathons and half marathons with... she actually is an ultra-marathon runner.

I think Saucony shoes can not be beat- for long-long-long races (like a marathon) Francesca always said to wear Montrail shoes (they sponser her and now she sells them!)

I liked Saucony for the fit and when I was in the Marines, they were cheaper than Nike... now is not the case. I still have the pair right before I moved to the country and stopped running, and they should be ok for a while.

I am going to email you my favorite running music. It has a good beat and just sounds enthusiastic. (but it is in portuguese- from ANOTHER graduate school friend ;-)

I think for a marathon, you also need some slower-paced inspirational music.

Keep it up. You are awesome.

Thanks Crystal! I just got the emails. I have heard good things about Saucony shoes. I eventually will need some new ones, mine are pretty old. I need to start running outside because it is so much different than a treadmill. I'm scared of the cold and the only time I can go right now is early in the morning and it is super dark. Maybe when I do my longer Saturday runs I will run outside.

Way to go Becky!! I am so impressed that you are getting up at 5 am to exercise...WOW! I wish that Brad's schedule would let me train with you for a Marathon, but good luck!

I started to write down every tip I could think of about marathon training. It was turning into a novel. So, rather than give you a dissertation on marathons that everyone else has to scroll through, I'm sending you an email. :)

becky, just think to yourself every day that you can do it. you are putting in the time and effort and training and you can do it. you don't have to be a super athlete to run a marathon. look at me. it would be great if you had someone to run with, but i think les said she would run the end with you. you can do it. you are an incredibly determined person. also, get a training schedule. we'll be there to cheer you on. when in may? xoxo

Mom, I just decided that I'm going to do the Spokane Marathon like I originally planned. I'm a little freaked out by the altitude difference if I did the Pocatello marathon. Anyway, it is May 15th (Ray's birthday). That would be awesome if you guys were there!!

First- sorry about all the typos, I have no use of one of the fingers on my left hand. It is awesome.

I was thinking- it is pretty important to get outside when it starts not being so bitter. I definitely would not choose to run outside right now either, but it is either that, or nothing at all. I noticed when I just did gym running/eliptical/treadmill for a few months, I started getting soft and running outside was WAY HARDER. It is pretty scary to run outside at night though- the ice, the dark, the cold and crazy people. I actually put my iPhone on speaker and do not wear headphones because I am so wierded out by it. You are amazing, and we will be cheering you on in spirit. You definitely are going to rock the marathon. What an example to your children... and all of us too!
