Maggie and her Boo
So, Maggie has a little obsession with her binky, or her Boo as she calls it. I'm dreading the day that I decide it is time to say goodbye to Boo. I have tried to limit Boo's use to nap/bed time, but she just steals Naomi's. So that didn't work out so well. I walked into the kitchen the other day to find this:

She had collected 4 Boos and was so happy and proud of herself. I know that some people are totally against using binkys, but then you could get a thumb sucker like Grace is (like I was), and she is still sucking her thumb at 6 (she comes by it honestly, I sucked my thumb until I was 10-let's just say that I get it!). Sometimes I feel like a bad mom that I let my kids have binkys so much and for so long, but then sometimes I don't. It's not like they will enter grade school still sucking a binky. Parenting is all about picking your battles, and this is just a battle that I'm not picking right now!!

Yeah, I get softer with each child and their binky. Mia was 16 months, just a month over when my pediatrician said I had to take it away from her. She was getting to the point of looking for it on a regular basis. Jack was almost two. I thought I was such a horrible mom letting him have it that long. He gave it up so easily. Cole LOVES his the most of all the kids so who knows how long he will have his. Probably before the next baby, whenever that will be.
We finally got rid of the binky just a couple of weeks ago. I read a parent tip in a magazine about just cutting the tip off so they can't get suction and it's not as satisfying to them. There was a bit of protest at first, but I told her it was broken and I couldn't fix it. She continued to ask for it, but hasn't for at least a week now. The only downside has been that she doesn't fall asleep as early anymore (I didn't call them the silencer for nothing). I was amazed at how easy it was because I, too, was dreading that moment. Probably wouldn't have been so easy if there would have been someone for Pip to swipe the binky from, though. Good luck. I've heard that is doesn't really start affecting the shape of their mouth until they're around 4 and by then Naomi will be about ready to give them up, too (fingers crossed).
AMEN sister, from the proud mother of a boy who has his binky until 2 months after his FOURTH birthday! (Ivy had hers until she was 3 and a half)! And, neither of them are thumb-suckers now, and both learned to go to sleep without their "B" when the time came! I couldn't agree more that you gotta "pick your battles" and honestly, these little kids grow up SO FAST, the binky thing really is a non-issue to me!!!
I love that she calls them "boos." I wish I'd tried harder to get Eva to use a binky instead of her fingers. With Colby I thought the tiny thumb was so cute in his mouth. Oh boy...I think I'll use that cut off the tip idea when it comes time for Lilia to get rid of it. She likes to hoard them also. One in her mouth, 1-2 in each hand if she can find that many. They must be cousins.
in hindsight, i took you binky away when you were two, becky. now i know it was way to early. you needed it longer. what did i know? almost as soon as i took the binky away, you started sucking your thumb. i wish i had clicked in and given you back your binky. i say, let them have them as long as they want. social pressure will get to them if they still have it in kindergarden;). xoxo
