Ummmm, okay. Did they bother to ask anyone in the Church about this? Wouldn't that be the most responsible and respectful thing to do, if that was their true objective? Could they possibly in a million years show the ceremony in it's proper context? Do they even have a clue what that proper context is? Do they understand anything about spirituality, or the fact that there is a spiritual aspect to the ceremony that they could never possibly convey? No, they don't.
I felt better when I read the Church's response. It kind of makes me think I shouldn't even be discussing this, or giving it any attention at all, but this is my blog and I wanted to vent. Anyway, this is my dad's comment on the whole thing. He's a pretty smart guy...
wanted to "depict [our] ceremony with the dignity and respect it is due."
Their claim is disingenuous. If dignity and respect for our ceremony was truly their objective,
then maybe they should have started by asking our opinion of their plan to depict OUR ceremony in any way at all. Wouldn’t respect include seeking out and honoring the wishes of those who own the religious belief? Also, knowing our belief that the ceremony’s dignity is based on its exclusivity, the moment they decide to reveal it to the world, they insult its dignity. They didn’t seek the Church’s opinion because they really didn’t want it. They knew they would not get our blessing on the matter. It would appear that the dignity and respect they claim to have taken “great pains” to achieve, were no real consideration at all. Either that, or they believe that respecting others’ private religious ceremonies requires only that you be “completely accurate” when you disclose them to the world, when you cast their pearls before swine.
How paradoxical, that they, with no authority, assume it on their mere presumption of “complete accuracy” in showing the ceremony in “the proper context and with respect." Since they produced this depiction without consultation from the real authority, i.e. the Church, who are they to claim complete accuracy or proper context? That would be like a job applicant claiming a right to the job simply on the basis of his mother’s high opinion of his qualifications.
It is difficult to believe that HBO cannot see the glaring discrepancies in their claims. Their
“ex-Mormon consultant” for instance, has certainly disqualified himself as a trustworthy authority by reneging on the covenant he made with God to never reveal these things. Who knows if his disgruntled opinion and recollection of the ceremony is accurate? Even if his recollection of tangible details was precise, he cannot claim qualification to address the spiritual aspect. Oh, you mean there’s a spiritual aspect? Also, HBO’s claim of “proper context,” is absurd. The real ceremony is authorized by God to be performed only in His holy temple, and only by proper priesthood authority for a specific eternal purpose. Depiction therefore, of that ceremony by non-members in a film studio, with the purpose of improving television ratings, is not proper context.
Amen, Dad.
Just say no to Big Love, HBO, and Time Warner.

The saddest part of the whole thing is that it is becoming more & more of a "normal" thing for producers of these networks to exploit all types of ones personal beleifs...whether it be religion, sexuality, race, marriage or political. Dont let it bother you, its coming from the pea brained person who is producing the film who has something to prove to only HIMSELF.
thanks becky for putting that video on. i felt the Spirit as soon as it started playing. i feel sad for those people who live their lives so that they drive away the Spirit, and cannot feel the sweet comfort that Spirit brings.
Very well-put. It is sad, more and more television is becoming unacceptable on all levels, but this is really sad. I actually did enjoy the show, it was so not about LDS, but I suppose in reaction to Prop 8 maybe, it has taken a turn. I feel badly on a couple levels, but I do not understand why a person would share this information, I don't care how "bitter" he or she is. Anyway. It just makes my stomach hurt.
That being said, our stake president counseled us last year to not watch things that, if thought about during sacrament, would detract from the spirit. That is, like everything, on TV. I felt better about refusing to let Grey's anatomy, CSI, house and all that... but honestly when I watched Big Love, I felt like it was really a comment on the crazy Warren Jeffs types, not LDS and it is not graphic, so... it was acceptable. I also guess people with no religious beliefs have no concept of "sacred" so it is not a problem for them to "share" things that are the cause of so much speculation. I just can not believe it though. I never thought that day would come when Christ's church was publicly mocked. It does not make sense to me.
Christ and His Church have always been mocked. From the day of his birth, through to His last breath. From the early disciples to the last apostle of the primitive church. From Joseph Smith and the restoration, to the Saints being run out of the United States. There is a time and a place to be angry, to stand up for what is right. Even Jesus got angry at the money changers in the temple. Here, with the show Big Love, we have an example as disturbing as that, and I should not judge? Did Jesus judge when he flipped over that table? Did he have a right to be angry? I for one am sick and tired of this PC world we live in. We cannot speak freely about anyone or anything, even if a situation is obvious and true, without being labeled, yet it is still perfectly acceptable to go after Jesus, His church and the members thereof. Don't force me back to my roots, I WILL FIGHT YOU.

when i was in the temple tonight (i actually did a session), it made me so sad to think what they have done to one of the most sacred parts of the whole temple ceremony. i will never, ever wathc another tom hanks movie. anyway, i think this is a deliberate attack on the church not just by that gay guy, but by those who are still upset about prop 8. it is a deliberate and hateful attack again my church. there was nothing innocent about this episode. debby
