"We become self-reliant," explains Julie Beck, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint's organization for women, "through obtaining sufficient knowledge, education, and literacy; by managing money and resources wisely, being spiritually strong, preparing for emergencies and eventualities; and by having physical health and social and emotional well-being."
Well, gosh darnit, we sure are trying. The leaders of my church council us to try and build up a years supply of food, in case of emergency. Be prepared, that says it all. My mom has been on the food storage bandwagon for a long time, and she has helped us to catch the spirit. We have a long way to go, but we are slowly getting there. For family home evening a couple of weeks ago, after Ray scored a bunch of big white storage buckets for FREE, we washed the buckets and filled them up with some of the food we have for our food storage.

The kids sure had fun helping!

Dad did most of the heavy lifting ;)

We even have this nifty little room in our basement where we can keep all of our food storage.

I just had to show everyone my HUGE score. Long story short, Albertsons was having a sale on Quaker products, add to that these awesome coupons I stumbled upon at Winco (I only took 20, okay?!), and I ended up getting all of this oatmeal, cereal, and granola bars (about 80 boxes of those) for about 32 cents each!!! Woo Hoo!!

My dear sweet husband said "I really need to get a gun to protect our food supply now that you are going to put that picture on the internet!"
**giggle** He and Glenn Beck, they're tight!

HAAAAA!!! That is crazy!! I saw about the $1/box of cereal sale at Albertsons, but you seriously scored! Looks like you guys could survive on granola bars alone for 2 months if need be.
I am amazed. I really am. I am ashamed to say our food storage was pretty much our meals for the last 6 months or so, so we have a bunch of wheat I have no idea how to use and some water! Good job, really, really, really!
Crystal, that is what food storage is for!! I'm glad you had it to use :)
Wow Rebecca that is awesome! Now if I could just follow suit :)
You are amazing!!! I am seriously impressed.
Yay food storage! Well done! I've been sampling from mine too, since I got back into school. It ain't just for the apocalypse, folks.
But I have to confess...my most prominent thought as I read this was "whoa, look at how curly Maggie's hair is!"
Becky, I used to work with a lady about 2 years ago who constantly instilled this in my head, that we needed an endless supply of food/canned goods. I ended up buying those same buckets you have at our hardware store and stocked up our ENTIRE pantry. When Ty was out of work & took a dramatic paycut last year, we were so thankful to have this endless supply of food~we used it all up and I never worried about food for our family. What a great thing you are doing!!! You just never know when you will need it. Now, I need to re-stock my supply since its almost all gone ;)
Impressive! You inspire me to do better!!!
Rebecca, Great job! I just went to the cannery last weekend and though I was doing a good job but you put me to shame! That's it, we are moving to Spokane next year so I can get in on all your secrets. Seeing the pictures of Coeur d'Alene makes me so homesick!
Hey, I like your granola and cereal storage better than mine. can we come live with you?
