Just Thinking...

My high school graduation-1993
Don't you just love Dana in this picture :)

Isn't modern technology amazing? Just over 10 years ago when I got married neither Ray nor I had a cell phone. We would go to work and go all day without talking to each other. Now we talk a few times a day. It would drive me crazy if I couldn't get ahold of him when I needed to. Now we can hardly imagine a world where someone doesn't have a cell phone. We don't even have a land line in our house.

When I was in high school 16 years ago I never used the internet. The computer was used to write papers, that's it. I learned to type in the 8th grade on an ancient typewriter. Remember that America Online commercial where the guy says, "Why do I need America Online, I already have a computer?" I admit, I was a little confused by this. When I was in college the majority of my research was done in the library, not on the internet. I went to the computer lab to type all of my papers and my only email was my college email. Now, it seems, everyone in college has their own laptop! Now you can get the internet on your phone!

Now, I can sit here and type this, give you updates on my family, show you all of my pictures, within seconds. You could see it from anywhere in the world! Convenient, yet a little scary! It is really amazing the way modern technology has allowed us to communicate and keep in touch. It is mind boggling, really.

But sometimes I feel like it is info overload, like things used to be so much simpler. There is always some new, and expensive, gadget that will supposedly improve our lives. I realize that there is no way to go back, I wouldn't even want to. All of this is very addicting, but also very useful and good. But sometimes I just want to simplify and just not be so "connected". The question is how to do this. I read this article from a blog I really like about this issue. Ouch, consider me rebuked. I guess you just go back to the old adage that has never failed us, "moderation in all things". I am going to resolve to not feel so much pressure, from myself, to keep my blog updated. I'm going to resist the urge to log on to facebook 56 times a day (I joke, sort of). Because there are definitely some other things in my life that need that attention. Moderation in all things, I like that.

You are such a gorgeous girl. I look at that pic. of you and it takes me back to the old days!

I dropped my phone in the tub last week. My school issues our cell phones, so I didn't have another one until a week later. It was hard sometimes, but nice on the other hand too. Usually when I get in the car, I make a phone call. Last week, I didn't have the luxury. I enjoyed just listening to the radio or talking with my kids instead. I hear ya...moderation in all things. That is something I really need to work on.

Thanks for the reminder.

I think about the connectivity we have all the time! It is insane! I did not have a cell ( nor any desire) until I became a single mom in 2004. The Internet though. .. I grew up with it. My grandfather did these local network things with our Tandy computer and neighbors we were friends with. Insane. We played prince of Persia...

I only facebook nowadys when I am at a red light. My impatience doing nothing has totally disappeared. I love checking on people though, it has been great for that. I still write actual letters occassionally, but I hardly have any patience for the time it takes to write legibally!

Anyway. I actually started my learning about the church on the Internet, so I am a big fan of technology.

Yesterdays wants are tomorrows needs.

Remember that sweet printer we used to have that used the printer paper with the tabs on the side you had to tear off. Then you had to reprint half of it because the paper wasn't lined up just right. Those were the days. MS dos was the best.

When we lived in Pocatello we had dial up that took forever. Now if the web page isn't up in 0.2 seconds I'm totally bugged.

Remember when we got graded on penmanship in school. Maybe they will just stop teaching kids to write altogether. I think texting is doing a serious number on grammer too. One of my pet peeves is when people don't use capital letters and punctuation, but the worst is when people write out texting abreviations. Seriously. Arvilla would be mortified.

I believe there is a reason the internet didn't come out until it did. I think there were very specific reasons we have the internet, like geneology. But with it comes evil things too. Neal A Maxwell said “the youth of this generation have a greater capacity for obedience than any previous generation.” I think that's part of the reason Al Gore didn't invent it until he did.

I love the flashback photo Becky!

I totally agree about how crazy technology is! I too learned how to type on an old typewriter in 8th grade, and only used computers to write papers! My only email for a long time was my USU account... YES it is crasy how far technology has come, and I could not agree more with the "moderation in all things," philosophy! I'm with ya sister!!!

Colin, does this mean you want me to start using capitals appropriately again? xoxo Mom
