I smelled cigarette smoke when I was on the elliptical machine this morning. The smell of someone who has smoked their whole life...their skin is saturated with the smell. Out of the corner of my eye I checked out the person who had just gotten on the machine beside me. It was a man, probably in his 60's. I suddenly felt so much compassion for him. Here was someone who was probably suffering
more than me at the gym. I thought about how hard it must be for him to catch the breath he needed to exercise. But here he was at the gym at 5:30 am. That takes commitment! If only he could find that same commitment to kick the habit. I have heard that nicotine is as addictive as heroin, poor guy...

Valerie is learning about the "evils of tobacco" in health and had to interview someone who smokes and ask all sorts of fun questions like "do you have bad breath?"
"do you have yellow teeth?!" (talk about awkward). Thing is, she called my mom first (age 50) and my brother answered, so she interviewed him. He is 24 and started at 14 apparently.
With the knowledge we have today, you wonder how anyone could smoke. Many still do, and I feel for them also. I wish them all the will, desire, and capability to quit their habit. As a member of the church so many tease me about not having any freedom because of the word of wisdom. I am grateful for its counsel. Because of my desire to follow it, I am FREE of harmful substance addictions, and that feels pretty good! This doesn't mean I am perfect. I have my vices too. It's facebook, blogging, reality t.v....you get my point. I need to work on those addictions!
Oh, that is super sad! Impressive that he is trying to exercise though. And at FIVE THIRTY IN THE MORNING? Wow, I admire BOTH of you for that!!!
