One Week Old

Maggie and Naomi are kindred spirits, she is always trying to give Naomi her binki :)

Here are some crazy kids...

Naomi was one week old on Friday (it took me a while to get to the computer for a blog post!).  It is amazing to me how quickly they change when they are newborns.  These pics are from her one week birthday.  Her umbilical cord fell out that day and she got her first bath.  She really liked it!  She didn't cry much at all.  She is a good baby.  With the exception of her first night home, she has mostly just been waking up at night to eat, then going right back to sleep.  Sometimes I have to put her in bed with us, but she usually goes right back to sleep.  I have always said that I could never sleep with my babies in bed with me, but it doesn't seem to be a problem with Naomi (maybe it is just exhaustion :))

Maggie and Elliot have been extremely emotional the last few days, Grace has been having serious problems hearing me when I tell her no (even more than usual) and she cut Maggie's hair yesterday (don't even get me started).  It has definitely been an adjustment for everyone-Max has been wigging out a little bit too.  But we all love Naomi so much, she is so precious.  I just really need to make an effort to spend a little one on one time with all of the kids.  It is times like this that make me better understand the divine calling of motherhood.  I realize how important I am to my children, and that makes me want to be a better person all around.  I can honestly say that at this point in my life I feel peaceful and fulfilled.  I feel lucky to be a mom to these precious little souls.  It isn't always easy or fun, and I definitely have my moments of insanity, but I know that I am doing what I am supposed to be doing at this point in my life, and that feels good.

I thought this from the brand-new pictures of Naomi, but now I REALLY see resemblance between her and Asher. Especially those lips! She really is so precious and it is still taking a lot of getting used to for Valerie at this point. Asher is 4 months old and she had 12 years of me to herself... well 11 before Matt came along and then one more and there is a BABY. I asked Matt to watch Asher 2 weeks ago so Valerie and I could spend some time together, but Asher was especially crabby, so that never happened. In fact, I have not been able to do that since he was born and while she REALLY LOVES him, she is kind of sad too. Mostly she is happy though. She is ultra-proud at church and school and when she has company, but it is an adjustment. What I am so grateful for is that she is so much older. I do not know HOW ON EARTH I could have done this with another child who needs a mom. I mean that. HOW. HOW. HOW does one "do it" with lots of young children. I honestly do not know.

Also, Ray is amazing, way to go with him and the potty business, it sounds like Elliot is only going to have to perfect the potty now and that is awesome.

As for babies in bed... Valerie slept in her crib from the first night onward. Asher... well... he is still in our bed. I am terrified to leave him in his crib for now. I suppose most of that is because of my nephew, but his room is the furthest room from our bedroom and I like snuggling with him and looking over to see my perfect angel laying there. Besides, it is not like I have a husband to snuggle with at night ;-) at least, that is part of my excuse...

Anyway, you are doing amazingly. I honestly am terrified of another pregnancy because I just don't think I would be any good at mothering more than one small child at a time.... of course that is an interesting thing considering I can not go on hormonal birth control... alas... but I admire you to near worship status.

Your kids are all so gorgeous! Congrats to Elliott for pooping on the potty! I still can't believe you have 4 kids. And I really can't believe that you and Ray have been married for almost 10 years! You will love Maui, I've heard a lot of people say that it's their favorite island. Who's going to watch your kids when you go? I'm assuming Grandma and Grandpa?

It's so weird to think that pretty soon I'll be blogging about my little sweetie. I remember when Grace and Elliott were born, it seems like only a year or two ago! Crazy how fast time goes.

Hope everyone is adjusting well to the new addition, she's a cutie! :o)

Aww, she's such a Vanderkid. (Almost put your name.) I can't believe how fast her cord fell out!!!! Is that normal? It seems like 3 weeks with my kids. Maybe I just don't remember right. She's so adorable, and I love the picture of her and Maggie. They'll all get used to it soon, and it will be like she was never not there. I wish I could come see you guys!

Love seeing the pictures. Congrats of the poop in the potty. I am starting to introduce Piper to the idea of it, but I don't think she's quite ready (or maybe it's me). As far as everyone adjusting, I hear you. I only had 2 dogs and a cat to adjust, but that adjustment cost me the carpet in my downstairs bathroom (why there was carpet there in the first place is beyond me) and even the vet has commented on how much Sam grayed in the first year of having Piper. I'm sure everyone will find their bearings in your home sometime soon. Hope you're all doing well!
